The rooms that work were laid out as a whole. Where the seats go determines how big the screen should be and how far the fronts can spread. Ceiling height determines whether overhead channels are worth doing. Where the equipment lives determines how much heat has to get out and where the cable has to arrive. Decide those in order and the room is straightforward. Decide them backwards, starting from a screen someone already bought, and the compromises stack up.
Light and hard surfaces matter more than most people expect. A room with a window facing the screen and bare drywall on every side will fight you regardless of what you put in it. Soft treatment on the first reflection points, a plan for the window, and a seating row that is not pushed against the back wall do more for the result than moving up a tier of speakers. We install into finished rooms including finished basements; the framing and finishing itself is a different trade.
